Real Salt Lake Names Mike Petke as New Head Coach

Former New York Red Bulls coach Mike Petke has been named the new head coach of Real Salt Lake.

Petke replaces Jeff Cassar who was fired at RSL on March 20. Petke was hired by RSL's USL team Real Monarchs in December but ended up only coaching one game for them, a 2-1 win in Portland last weekend.

The former New York Red Bulls defender was an assistant with the New Jersey based club from 2011-2012 and the head coach from 2013-2014. While with RBNY, Petke led the team to its first MLS trophy, the 2013 Supporters' Shield. Petke was fired in January of 2015 and the club received massive backlash from fans.

Petke's return to MLS has been much anticipated since his RBNY firing. Now with nearly a full season to work with at RSL, we'll see if he can get the Claret and Cobalt back on the right track.
