Just a couple of weeks ago, Toronto FC fans were wondering just how much longer it would take for Sebastian Giovinco to break out of his 8 game goal-less drought. Since then, the Atomic Ant has exploded with 7 goals and 3 assists, vaulting him into the top spot on the Golden Boot chart (15 goals and 10 assists) and pushing TFC into 2nd place in the Eastern Conference with a game in hand.
His assist on Wednesday setting up Tosaint Ricketts’ game winner against RSL followed by his 4th career MLS hat trick on Saturday evening at BMO Field helped TFC dominate the Revs 4-1, earning him yet another Total MLS Player of the Week honour.
Seba got the Reds on the board in the 20th minute after picking up a deflected Michael Bradley shot just inside the box before hitting it, first touch, with the outside of his foot, curling the ball around Kei Kamara and Bobby Shuttleworth.
Just 9 minutes later, Giovinco doubled TFCs lead. After a bit of a dangerous challenge from Mark Bloom, the defender won the ball and found Giovinco just to the side of the 18 yard the box. Giovinco managed to find space and cut to the corner of the 18 and sent a curling shot over Shuttleworth’s head in what should certainly be a Goal of the Week candidate.
Giovinco’s video game like abilities proved too daunting of a task to contain as the tiny Italian weaved through tackles and scored almost at will.
The Atomic Ant capped his hat trick hero evening with a penalty in the 79th minute, won impressively by Jonathan Osorio. Seba placed the ball into his favourite left side and celebrated with supporters in the south end.
Our honourable mention goes to another hat trick hero, Seattle Sounders forward Clint Dempsey. After finding themselves down 1-0 early, the Sounders 3-1 comeback victory was fueled by 3 clinical goals by Dempsey with some help from his sidekick and probable Rookie of the Year Jordan Morris as well as newcomer DP Nicolas Lodeiro.
