Total MLS Player of the Week - Week 24

The Chicago Fire have certainly struggled this season to pick up points. Their biggest struggle of all seems to be picking up points the road which has saddled the once proud franchise with the dubious record of 36 straight away games without a victory. This record stretches back to July of 2014; Sporting KC were defending MLS Cup Champions, Camilo Sanvezzo was the defending Golden Boot winner...you get the picture. It’s been a while.

Saturday evening in Montreal, everything changed and it was in large part because of one man.

The Total MLS Player of the Week for Week 24 is Ghanaian speedster, David Accam. When you contribute to breaking such an ugly streak, you deserve the recognition.

The last place Fire gave the struggling Impact a wake up call they won't soon forget, and things got started early.

It took just 15 minutes for Luis Solignac to open the scoring for Chicago. A Montreal corner cleared out of the box found the feet of Accam who then turned on the afterburners. Blazing up the middle of the pitch, it seemed as if the Ghanaian would go all the way, but in an act of unselfish leadership, he found Solignac who placed it into the back of the net.

Just 2 minutes later, Accam nearly doubled Chicago’s lead after going one v. one with Hassoun Camara and unleashing a rocket off the woodwork.

Late into the second half after some impressive possession play from the Fire, Accam finally added a goal of his own. A fantastic through ball found Michael De Leeuw, who then sent in a low cross to the top of the 6 yard box. Arturo Alvarez made connection, sending the ball goalward until taking a slight deflection off Accam to give Chicago a 2-0 lead.

Matt Polster would add another goal for Chicago to give them an unprecedented 3-0 victory.

Our honourable mention this week goes to Seattle Sounders striker Clint Dempsey for his 2 goal performance in a 3-1 victory over Cascadia rivals Portland. Dempsey opened the scoring for Seattle on a penalty kick, then added a second goal 20 minutes later that turned out to be the eventual game winner. Also, a shout out to Cristian Roldan for his impressive 1 goal and 1 assist performance as well.
