Total MLS Player of the Week - Week 23

With the Rio Summer Olympics in full swing, we’ve all seen just how special it is to break and set new records. On Saturday evening in Harrison, New Jersey, MLS fans witnessed a legend in the making claim the top spot on the Red Bull’s all-time goal scorers list and he did so in fine fashion.

Total MLS’ Player of the Week for Week 23 is New York Red Bulls DP striker, Bradley Wright-Phillips.

BWP has been one of the most lethal strikers in MLS since joining the Red Bulls back in 2013. Not only did he tie the record for most goals in a season in 2014, he has quietly made his way up to 3rd place in the golden boot race thus far with 14 goals for the Red Bulls, his last two tying and surpassing one Juan Pablo Angel for the all-time team record.

The Red Bulls welcomed the Impact to Red Bull Arena and it was Montreal who opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Just seconds later it was a pass from Sean Davis that found Wright-Phillips at the top of the box and his touch managed to send the ball slowly dribbling into the net to equalize. Not a pretty goal, but a goal just the same.

Shortly before halftime, BWP put his Red Bulls ahead with a perfectly placed glancing header on an excellent cross from Sean Davis once again.

Davis would add a goal of his own in the 2nd half, allowing the Red Bulls to celebrate a new all-time leading goalscorer and three very important points to move them just two points out of 1st place in the Eastern Conference.

Our honourable mention this week goes to Seattle Sounders newest DP, Uruguayan midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro. A dominant performance by the Sounders was highlighted by a fantastically taken goal by Lodeiro as well as his setup of Jordan Morris’ game winner. In addition to his offensive output, Nico also accumulated an impressive 8 recoveries in the midfield. His addition to Seattle has provided the Sounders with a much needed spark after an uncharacteristically rough start to the season.
