Many MLS fans make away trips with their teams. Close rivals, like New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls, make it very easy for larger number of fans to travel. There are a number of things you should not do when visiting a stadium for an away game, mainly, don't break the law. And if you do break the law, don't brag about it on social media.
During Sunday's New York Derby at Red Bull Arena, won by the Red Bulls 4-1, one New York City FC fan decided to take home what he called a souvenir from the game. Maybe he bought a scarf? One of those foam fingers? No, he took a seat from the stadium. I know what you're thinking, "that isn't legal." And you would be correct. To make matters worse, the fan decided to brag about his theft on Instagram. His Instagram account with his full name on it.
The post has since been deleted (of course) and his profile is now private. However, the damage has been done in the day of age where nothing can ever be deleted from the internet. This fan, Andy, will be looking at a very lengthy, maybe lifetime ban, from Red Bull Arena and probably other sanctions from the league. That's on top of what law enforcement decides to do.
Next time Andy, just buy a scarf.
