It was only a matter of time until the Vancouver Whitecaps offense caught fire, and it just so happens that it took a meeting with a Canadian rival to provide the spark. A 4 goal outpouring against TFC, who were the leagues stingiest defense prior to Saturday evening, showed just how fast and potent the Caps attackers really are.
Total MLS Player of the Week for week 11 is Whitecaps striker Kekuta Manneh.
It was quite the week for the young Whitecaps striker who, on Wednesday night, assisted Blas Perez’s fantastic 89th minute bicycle kick winner against the Chicago Fire. A cross country flight to Toronto didn’t seem to slow him down either. In the 14th minute of Saturday night’s meeting with TFC, Manneh capitalized on a defensive mix up in the midfield and turned on his after-burners. Manneh’s incredible speed beat the entire TFC backline in a half field foot race, then with a low shot, he beat Clint Irwin giving the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead.
With Sebastian Giovinco giving TFC some hope, equalizing in the 66th minute, Manneh did something special. After receiving a pass from Pedro Morales about 30 yards from goal, Kekuta Manneh cut along the top of the box and in one quick movement absolutely undressed Steven Beitashour and the rest of TFC’s defenders, sending them in the opposite direction and restoring the Whitecaps lead in the 70th minute. Manneh would go on to assist Pedro Morales for the games eventual winning goal giving the Whitecaps all 3 points on the road.
The young Vancouver strikers’ 2 goal and 2 assist week 11 was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Whitecaps and deserves recognition.
Our honourable mention this week goes to Toronto FC’s heart and soul Sebastian Giovinco. When all seemed lost on Saturday night, Giovinco’s 2 goals and 1 assist provided a lifeline for the Reds and almost singlehandedly stole a point for his team.
