Through 10 weeks of MLS play, the Montreal Impact sit alone at the top of the Eastern Conference and its certainly by no accident. Their top players are producing, their support players are chipping in, and their defenders and goalkeeping have been solid. Saturday’s incredible comeback draw against Columbus Crew is a testament to the fact that the Impact should never be counted out.
The Total MLS Player of the Week is Montreal Impact midfielder Ignacio “Nacho” Piatti.
After a couple of quiet weeks, Nacho picked up right where he left off. With the Impact down 1-0, a slight flick into the box from Didier Drogba found Piatti, who quickly changed directions with a fantastic move and slotted the ball to Steve Clark's far post to equalize in the 26th minute. The Crew had built a seemingly insurmountable 4-1 lead early into the 2nd half and it seemed as if the Impact would be done for the day. However, Montreal had different plans. In the 57th minute, Piatti earned a penalty after being felled by Ethan Finlay in the box. Didier Drogba converted the subsequent spot kick. One minute later Nacho added another tally, giving him a brace through a well taken goal from inside the 18 yard box to put the Impact to within 1. Dominic Oduro would equalize in the 90+3 minute to allow the Impact to steal a point on the road.
Piatti’s incredible technical skill and eye for goal was crucial to Montreal’s success on the weekend and made him more than deserving of the honour of Player of the Week for a 2nd time this season.
Our honourable mention this week goes to Piatti's teammate, Didier Drogba, whose outstanding 1 goal and 2 assist performance was also vital to Montreal’s ability to leave Columbus with a point to stay atop of the Eastern Conference.
