Another week of MLS soccer is in the books and it was highlighted by yet another lopsided Galaxy victory. LA humbled a surging Real Salt Lake 5-2 at StubHub Center on Saturday night, putting up 4 or more goals in a game for a second week in a row and the third time this season. With a squad as stacked as the Galaxy, it’s always refreshing when a player not named Dos Santos, Magee, or Keane takes the spot light - and that’s exactly what happened.
Total MLS’ pick for Player of the Week for Week 8 is LA Galaxy winger Emmanuel Boateng.
The Ghanaian born winger played a pivotal role in 3 of the Galaxy’s 5 goals, contributing with 1 goal and 2 assists on the night. After LA equalized in the 19th minute, they never looked back. Boateng was sent through down the wing by a perfectly weighted pass from Ashley Cole, whose cross picked out Mike Magee at the top of the 6 yard box to give LA a 2-1 lead.
Boateng added a goal of his own in the 41st minute when he poked a ball home that ricocheted off GyasiZardes inside the 18 yard box, giving the Galaxy a 3-1 lead. Boateng then added a second assist just before half time after working hard to recover possession and allowing Giovani Dos Santos the opportunity to chip in a fantastic highlight reel goal, giving the Galaxy a 4-1 lead.
Our honourable mentions this week go to Toronto FC legend in the making, Sebastian Giovinco, and New York Red Bulls striker, Bradley Wright-Phillips. Giovinco’s brace in the 401 Derby not only gave Toronto FC their 3rdroad victory of the season against heated Canadian rival Montreal Impact, but also put him level with Dwayne De Rosario as TFC’s all-time leading goal scorer. BWP’s late game brace for RBNY gave the home side an unprecedented, albeit controversial, comeback victory over Orlando City, putting an end to his depressing goalless streak and giving the Red Bulls just their second win of the season.
