Total MLS’ Player of the Week for Week 7 is LA Galaxy striker Giovani Dos Santos.
Gio has been heavily criticized in his short MLS tenure for not living up to the monumental expectations that were heaped onto him from the jump. Some have gone so far as to say he is overrated. Having fully recovered from a nagging injury, his 2 goal and 1 assist performance on Friday night against Houston Dynamo not only helped his team secure a full 3 points, but also helped silence some of the negativity surrounding his game.
After the Galaxy conceded a goal in the first minute of Friday night’s fixture, Gio capitalized on a defensive mix up from the Dynamo, pouncing on a loose ball and beating Joe Willis to equalize in the 4th minute. Fifteen minutes before the interval, a fantastic cross field switch from Steven Gerrard found Dos Santos just outside the box, and after some excellent ball control, Gio slotted it home to put LA up 3-1. Gio then added an assist to Gyasi Zardes’ goal to ice the game and give LA their second 4-1 victory this season.
Our honourable mention this week goes to Columbus Crew SC’s Justin Meram. His 1 goal and 2 assist performance had him involved in every Columbus scoring play on the night. Meram also helped provide the spark Kei Kamara needed to get onto the score sheet for the second time in 2016.
