What a first week of MLS action we were treated to on Sunday. With all 20 teams involved, an impressive 36 goal total tally made the action all that much more exciting. In this inaugural edition of the Total MLS Player of The Week, it really was a no brainer.
Our selection for PoTW is none other than Montreal’s Ignacio “Nacho” Piatti.
The Impact made their way to Vancouver, sans Drogba, and it really didn’t seem to faze them. On the back of Piatti’s magnificence, the Impact's 3-2 victory shocked a full house at BC Place.
If Nacho’s first goal, a likely Goal of the Year candidate, wasn't enough, he proceeded to set up Dominic Oduro for the Impact’s second goal, then iced the game late with a calm and cool finish to give his team full points on the day. The Whitecaps are no push over either. With probably one of the strongest teams in the West, the Impact made it look easy despite giving up a late goal.
If you thought the Impact were a 1 man team, Drogba being that man, think again. Nacho is more than able.
Honourable mention goes to Mike Magee, who made his return to LA a memorable one. His 2 goal and 1 assist performance in a 4-1 Galaxy drubbing of DC United was a very close second for one simple reason: his supporting cast. Although Magee came on as a substitute for Gio Dos Santos, when you share a field with Robbie Keane, Steven Gerrard, Nigel De Jong and Sebastien Lletget, and they’re the ones providing your service, this type of performance takes a small step back.
