Week 3 in MLS was yet another treat as we saw plenty of goals, some controversy and some excellent soccer action overall. But with all of that on-field showmanship, one player outshone the rest of the crowd.
The Total MLS Player of The Week for week 3 is Red Bulls midfielder Felipe Martins.
It was a see-saw battle at Red Bull Arena that had the Houston Dynamo poised to hand the Red Bulls their third straight loss to start the season. The Felipe Show started midway through the 2nd half as the midfielder picked up the ball just outside the 18 yard box and placed a perfectly weighted shot into the far side netting, equalizing for the Red Bulls. But his crowning moment came just a few minutes later. As time was winding down, Felipe stood over a free kick, and sent a rocket curling over the wall and into the top corner; 3 points sealed for the Red Bulls and a goal of the week candidate without a doubt.
With 6 braces in 5 of this weekends games, it's only fair that an honourable mention go out to all those guys who made multi-goal games look easy...I'm looking at you Will Bruin, Pedro Morales, Gyasi Zardes, Fanendo Adi, and CJ Sapong.
Something that's far less common than a multi-goal game is the ability to save 2 penalty kicks in a single game, a feat that's only been reached 3 other times in MLS history. So a big shout out to Bobby Shuttleworth as well for keeping the Union-Revs game a lot more respectable than it could've been.
